  • Quite by accident, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming discovers that the mold penicillin has an antibiotic effect.
  • Walter E. Diemer an accountant for Fleer Chewing Gum in Philadelphia, invents the first batch of bubble gum, making it pink because this is the only shade of food coloring on hand.
  • Republican Herbert Hoover wins the Presidency, collecting over 83% of the electoral vote to defeat Democrat Alfred E. Smith.
  • On November 18th, Mickey Mouse makes his film debut as Walt Disney's "Steamboat Willie" premiers at the Colony Theater in New York City.
  • BORN in 1928: Child Star Shirley Temple, Singer James Brown and Rosemary Clooney, Actor Arnold Schnarzenegger, Poet May Angelou, Film director Stanley Kubrick, My Mom Winnie Weselquist Herburger.
