How You Know You Are A Chicken Lover...

A Year Ago we became the proud owners of 10 chickens. We had no clue what we were doing but after lots of reading and talking to a few farmers we learned.
Art and I are quite taken with our chickens, we might even say we are chicken lovers.
How does one know they are a chicken lover?

Maybe....
  • When you tell everyone you meet in town how well your chickens are doing today. or....
  • When you bake chicken treats instead of cookies.
  • When you cook breakfast for yourself and your chickens.
  • When you enjoy cleaning up the chicken coop
  • When you are excited over how many eggs you gathered today.
  • When you brag like a proud grandma over a double yolked egg.
  • When you call the vet for advice about a chicken and you don't care that he thinks your a little bit crazy.
  • When you are willing to wash chicken butts.
  • When you plan time away around how long your chickens will be alone.
  • When you step in chicken pooh and it doesn't bother you.
  • When you find yourself talking to the chickens and think that you know what they are saying
  • When you go into town to buy chicken feed and come home with 4 new chicks.
That's exactly what Art did. He brought them to the girls two days before they left for home.
They were delighted, that was 3 weeks ago, we lost one and three have survived and thrived.

We've kept them in the house, but they have gotten so big and started to smell like real chickens prompting Art to move them to new digs.

Tonight they are safe and sound in the garage under warming lights.

These guys are called Americanas (Easter Eggers) known to lay different colored eggs.
It will be fun to see them grow up.
And so the love story continues for us transplanted city folk....

Here is one of those double yolked eggs.  See why it makes this mamma proud?
